Do You Protect Your Garden With Your Home Insurance?

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

With us Brits enjoying longer and hotter summers each year, we are spending more time in and cash on our gardens. In truth, according to the Horticultural Trades Association, we spend a stupefying £3 bn. and a year on furniture, plants and garden appliances. Many people don’t really realize that our gardens won’t be protected by our home insurance in the event of burglary, damage or loss.

It is something that potentially many people have not even thought about insuring our garden. But it is sensible to protect our investment. The price of garden furniture, ornaments, state of the art Bbq’s etc all shortly mount up as we have seen and if something occurs, you might end up seriously in the red. And irrespective of how hard we try and protect our gardens, they can never be as secure as our houses, suggesting they’re left exposed to burglary and vandalism. Fresh research from the insurer Direct Line let slip that 1 out of 10 of owners is probably going to be a victim of burglary from their gardens.

They say that the most typical items that are robbed are hanging baskets, lawnmowers, gnomes, furniture, tools and even the plants! In a similar way, the national list garden furniture as the most typical item to be nicked, followed by bicycles, garden ornaments and statues. Even your clothes on the washing line aren’t safe, with them being the 7th most typical item that goes missing from the garden! And it isn’t just burglary that’s a difficulty. The weather can wreck havoc on your garden with snowstorms and storms causing serious damage and unfortunately, mindless vandalism is all too common.

Take a look at your home insurance policy totally to see what cover you have, if any. If it does offer cover for the garden as standard, don’t that only a restricted number of insurers do and even then it’ll possibly be basic cover. While most policies will cover outbuildings and other outbuildings, don’t say that this includes the remainder of the garden it doubtless won’t . If you garden isn’t covered, then look at doubtless changing insurer. And if you’re not convinced, why don’t you go around your garden and tot up how much it’ll cost to replace everything, plants included.
